Random Randomness

- Sitting in the coffee shop I have a perfect view of the snow atop our local foothills. It happens once or twice a year and only stays for a couple days so it's a fun treat for the eyes. It could also be a fun treat for the body if one is willing to hike about three hours as there is no access for vehicles. I'll enjoy it from a distance, thank you.

- To be honest, I'm really shocked at how much outrage/controversy/firestorm Rick Warren's invitation to participate in Obama's inauguration has stirred up....mostly from those on the left who feel somehow betrayed by Obama. That they don't understand politics, and that's exactly what this is, confuses me. Every President has a pastor give an invocation, and to ask Rick Warren who represents the faith of such a large number of Americans is a savvy political olive branch for Obama to extend. I'm constantly amazed at how intolerant those who holler for it the loudest often are. Plus....me likey Rick Warren.

- Tonight we have our Christmas edition of "The 3" which is our monthly Junior High outreach night. We've got pictures with Santa, Christmas Carolokee, A Christmas Scavenger hunt, A "snowball fight" and more planned. Should be fun.

- The countdown has begun for our annual dirt-bike trip to the desert (Ocotillo Wells) the morning after Christmas. We go riding several times a year, but this is always our longest trip. The only dilemma so far is that I promised a friend he could use my bike (he's thinking about buying it) because I was supposed to have my new one by the time we leave. Right now, it looks like I won't have my new bike and I don't want to break my word to my friend so I'm bikeless! BUMMER.

- Each year I try to read a new fiction book on the trip. I rarely read fiction so it's usually the only one I read all year. Any suggestions?

I just finished reading, "Blindness" by Jose Saramago. It won the Nobel Prize for Literature a few years ago. It's definitely not an 'upper' and gets really intense in a few places. But it's also very thought provoking and a great book to reflect upon. If I had to rate it like a movie it would be an R, but an excellent read none the less.

If you are looking for a faith encouraging book you gots to get your hands on Leif Enger's first novel, Peace Like a River. I love what John Piper says, "I fear saying something trite. I read one reviewer who said, 'heartwarming.' Like a rifle bullet in the head, it's heartwarming. The heart needs something bigger and deeper than warming. And this book helps." This is nothing "christianese" about book...Janette Oke did not write the forward for this one. :0)

interesting, i realize that lefties can be just as fundamentalistic as right-wingers. but the small amount of left reaction i've seen has been praising obama's choice of rick (i've read multiple people who have said or written, "i might not agree with everything rick warren says or stands for, but i applaud the choice of him or an invocation." people seem to think that the contrast of obama choosing rick is a great representation of what america should be.

Marko,
Really? I have certainly heard some moderates praising it but many who might be considered politically left or "far left" are up in arms....they feel betrayed. In fact, yesterday NOW (national organization for women)issued a formal statement asking Obama to resend his invitation. Various stories have been on just about every news channel talking about the response from "the left".

I read your blog often, mostly looking for tips to help with our Junior High Ministry. I do not agree with Rick Warren giving the speech for Obama. I think by doing this he is supporting Obama and what he stands for. I mean when did we as a Christian community start supporting gay marriage and abortion? I think as christians we have to stand behind our president and if he is not a Christian we should pray for him but I do not think we should openly endorse him and what horrible things he stands for.
